What Cannot Go in a Dumpster?
Certain materials are strictly prohibited in dumpster rentals due to landfill regulations and safety concerns. Placing prohibited items in your dumpster can result in extra fees and load rejection.
⛔ Strictly Prohibited Items
- •Hazardous materials — chemicals, solvents, pesticides, oil, gasoline, antifreeze
- •Liquids of any kind — paint, stains, oils, fuels (even in sealed containers)
- •Medical waste — needles, syringes, pharmaceuticals, biohazardous materials
- •Asbestos — insulation, floor tiles, siding, roofing with asbestos
- •Tires — any size, prohibited by landfill regulations
- •Car batteries — lead-acid batteries of any type
- •Propane tanks & gas bottles — including small camping cylinders
- •Fluorescent tubes & bulbs — contain mercury, require special disposal
- •Ammunition & explosives — any type
- •Wet paint — fully dried latex paint cans (lids removed) may be OK, call first
Why Are These Items Prohibited?
Landfills in Ohio have strict regulations about what can be accepted. Hazardous materials can contaminate soil and groundwater. Liquids can cause entire loads to be rejected at the landfill gate. If prohibited items are found in your dumpster, you may be charged for the cost of sorting, re-disposal, and any landfill penalties.
⚠️ Allowed With Prior Authorization Only
- •Roofing shingles — very heavy, may exceed weight limits. Call first.
- •Household appliances — ovens, washers, dryers, etc. May incur surcharges.
- •Freon-containing items — refrigerators, freezers, A/C units. $65 per unit disposal fee.
How to Dispose of Prohibited Items
Most counties in Southern Ohio have household hazardous waste collection programs. Contact your county solid waste district for drop-off locations and schedules. Tires can typically be taken to tire retailers or county collection events.
